Week 15: Unang una nga bunyag ko (My very first baptism)!

Maayong aga!

[2 baptisms in one day! Pinakanami nga feeling!]
Another great week here in [my] beautiful...area! The beginning of the week was a bit slow, pero it ended great because my golden investigator got baptized and my golden family all came to church and we had such a great spiritual experience. Ara gid ang Balaan nga Espritu upod sa amon (The Holy Ghost was really there with us) this entire week, especially sa buyag mismo (because of the baptism)! After she was baptized, she shared her testimony and one part really stuck out to me - thank you Sister Ventura kag Reyes from helping me trust in Jesus Christ. I'm so grateful to her and her growth in the gospel!
So the family of 4 I have been teaching (my golden family) is scheduled to be baptized this Saturday, minus the mother who is planning on May 19. I am so amazed by the dad of the family kay the past few weeks we have teach Saturday night sa ila (to them), he says that he probably won't make it to church because he has work on Sunday. Pero when when we go to church Sunday morning, he's there and it's such a testimony builder to me about his faith in not working and what he prioritizes.
[This is just so cool, it has white fur, haha!]
In other news, I've eaten duro nga different types of food this week, haha - carabaw mango, inihawng dugo, kombo, buko pandan, tanbis, mango (mangoes here are so different than the one's in the U.S. - they're so matamis (sweet)!).

Also I became a member of Buga-buga!

Amo na, tani mayad ang week ninyo!

Halong kamo,

Week 14: Tapos na sa unang transfer ko (Done with my first transfer)

Maayong hapon,

[Got a birthday card from my Calditaran family! It made me so happy to read the huge card that they all wrote on!]
Oo done with my first transfer, and one more transfer until I'm done with my missionary training! This week was interesting at first it wasn't the best, but towards the end of the week it went really well!
[Can you tell we're companions? I didn't even know that we made the same pose until I checked the picture!]
[Our district and our two Zone Leaders!]
So my week didn't start off too well because we were punted for most of it. Ang buot silingon sang (the meaning of) "punted" is when you schedule appointments to teach and they're not there when you go to their balay (house). So yeah we were punted a bunch this week but I didn't let that get me down! However, I think Heavenly Father was testing my patience because later in the week we had a lot of good progress!  The Brother's wife I mentioned in my e-mail last week sat in at every lesson we had sa ila this week! She even shared how she has been sharing with her friends what we teach her. It has been so amazing to see her growth and earlier this week, we invited to her to be baptized and she actually said yes! I was so happy kay for so long she has loved having us over, pero she has just always been very shy to share to us about her feelings. She has grown so much and I'm excited to see her continue to grow with her husband and two children in this gospel!
[3/5 of the original Ilonggo Provo Squad! Elder Aldridge (the Elder next to me) and I see each other pretty often since were in the same Zone! This was our first time seeing E. McClure (the other American Elder) since we got to Iloilo because we had a combined zone meeting! It was so cool to be reunited with the batch, maskin we weren't complete!]
[It's Sister Reyes birthday today! #22 The Elders in our area helped me plan a scavenger hunt for her as her surprise birthday adventure!šŸ˜Š]
In other good news, one of our other investigators is on track to be baptized this Saturday, April 28. My first baptism! I'm so excited. This Sister was just so ready for the gospel and I'm excited for her journey to begin as being a member in our church and for her to be closer to Jesus Christ as she's ever been! Life as a missionary is great and I love it. Everyday I see blessings in my life and the hand of the Lord is always stretched out towards me! I know that His hand is also stretched out towards all of you too, remember that!

Halong kamo!

Week 13: Officially Isa ka bulan kag pila ka adlaw sa Area ko! (1 month and a couple days in my area!)

Maayong aga!

Just a couple highlights:

I rode on top of a jeepney! It was actually not as scary as I thought it was going to be, and very presco, gali! Since my area is very country gid, I am allowed to ride sa ibawbaw sang (on top of) mga jeepney! Those who serve in the city are sadly not allowed to. Pero it was so much fun and my seat was a huge tire - sadga gid!
[Eating peanut flavor ice candy!]
[My first exchanges, it was so interesting because i was in the city and it is so different from my area! Here I understand everyone because it's Ilonggo gid, haha! Also it's very small compared to my area.]
I had my first exchanges! Sister Reyes and I spent our first day away from each other - she stayed [in our area] and I went to [the city] for the day. Wow [the city] is like a less busy version of Manila. It was different gid because everything is so squished together compared to [my area] where everything was spaced out. I was kind of worried to go to an area and teach people that I don't know as well as my investigators, pero I had a really good time and the people were still kind and still so receptive. I met so many people dira (over there) that I hope I get to meet again later if I possibly get assigned there! Maskin nakulba-an ko sa una (Even though I was worried at first), I realized my purpose was the same and I was there agud pagbulig sa iban nga mga tao mangin mas lapit kay JesuCristo (in order to help other people become closer to Jesus Christ). šŸ˜Š
[Just chillin' with the family I'm teaching, while eating yellow sandia!]
[Oysters for sale!]
Towards the end of the week, I had the most spiritual experience EVER! It was when Sister Reyes and I taught one of my investigators that I discussed in my past email (the Brother). So usually the Brother's wife doesn't usually stay for the entire lesson and walks around, but this time she sat down the entire time! When we first got there we just had a little small talk and caught up about how they were doing and then I'm not sure how, but the Brother's wife shared with us [a personal trial she endured]. I felt so grateful that she was comfortable enough to share that with us. They were both sad about it, so we shared Moroni 8:8 with them -

"Listen to the words of Christ, your Redeemer, your Lord and your God. Behold, I came into the world not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance; the whole need no physician, but they that are sick; wherefore, little children are whole, for they are not capable of committing sin; wherefore the curse of Adam is taken from them in me, that it hath no power over them"

The Brother like I said before has had a couple vices, but he expressed his gratitude to us about the knowledge we gave him. He said that he felt a comforting feeling in his heart and he wants to work even harder towards baptism to be clean. His wife is very shy pero kabalo ko nga nabatyagan niya ang paghidaet (I know that she felt peace) because she stayed the entire lesson.
[My district!]
[Dinner at a member's balay!]
Kabalo ako nga (I know that) missionary work isn't easy, but it is worth it. It's worth it to sacrifice a year and a half of my life so that I can share with people what I feel deep in my heart to be the truth. I know that the gospel of Jesus Christ (of faith in Him and His Atonement, repentance, baptism by a person who has priesthood authority, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end) puts us on the path to be with our families after this life happily forever.

Week 12: Ang first General Conference ko sa misyon!

Maayong Hapon!

As I always say, I'm definitely loving it here as each day passes by! I'm just so happy with my decision that I made to serve a mission!! Even on days where it is raining (alot) and init at the same time, I just remind ang kaugalingon ko (myself) that I'm here not for myself, pero I'm here to help everyone around me and share with them the knowledge and beliefs that I have!
I don't have much time pero as usual, pictures are below:
[Madamo nga hangin!]
[One of my investigators birthday party]
[General conference at the stake center (we had to travel an hour by bus to get there!)]
[Sister A. and Brother D.]
Story time: The brother to the right, si Brother D., goes to the same church and ward as my Uncle [here in the Philippines (a different island)]! I was able to meet him because his girlfriend, si Sister A., is in the same Stake [that I'm serving in]! My uncle gave Brother D. snacks to give to me and so now I have chocolate cookies and polverone! Haha, astig!
[Just casually eating some tubo or sugar cane haha]
[District activity = Boodle Fight NAMIT!]

Halong kamošŸ˜,

Week 11: Birthday on P-Day!

Maayong hapon!

What a blessing that my birthday is on P-Day and I'm able to talk to family and friends and read birthday greetings on my actual birthday! Nalipay ko nga ari ako...para sa birthday ko (I'm happy to be here...on my birthday)!

Anyways this week was great. Any time I have to serve other people (especially while I am a full-time missionary) will always be an amazing time. Just some highlights:

We are very busy and have a lot people to share with parte sa ebanghelyo (about the gospel) kag parte kay Jesucristo (and about Jesus Christ)! People here are so kind and are so willing to listen to who we are and why we are here. Currently Sister Reyes and I have two progressing investigators and they are just so amazing. One of them is a Sister who just turned 18 this passed Tuesday and it was sobrang nami (super cool) because we extended the baptismal invitation to her on her birthday! She was so happy when we asked her and it just made me feel so warm inside that she is getting closer to the example of Jesus Christ. This Sister is so amazing and is just one of those people that has been ready to hear the gospel even when she, herself, didn't even know it! It's as if she has been prepared for this moment and has been waiting for missionaries to find her and help her in the path of Jesus Christ's gospel.

And another progressing investigator is a brother that has a wife and two kids. This brother is very receptive of our message but ever since we have been teaching him, he has [had] a drinking and smoking problem. However, we also invited him to be baptized this past Thursday and the first thing he said was "when will it be? Will it be on a weekend?" Haha that honestly made me so happy because it shows that he wants to become better and also follow Jesus Christ's example! And so far not only has he not drank or smoke, but his wife told us that he is having a better attitude around the house and is overall more happy!  Each time we visit these two investigators it makes me so happy to see them desire and want to change for the better.

Also this week I once again have tried new food! I tried fresh coconut meat with milk and it was soooo good. I forgot to take a picture. :(

Another highlight is that I am understanding way more Hiligaynon/Karay-a now! I still don't understand everything pero I understand the general message that people are trying to tell me. I'm so grateful that I am understanding the people more because now I can focus on helping them with whatever concerns they have and have spiritual experiences through the Holy Ghost.

I'm loving it here as each day passes and it's crazy to me how much time flies! I know that I'm here for a reason and I realize that each day no matter if it was good or bad. Any day serving the Lord is a great day (especially when it's your birthday)!
